There is bound to be some damage to the old boat propellers since there will be normal wear and tear. Such damage might lead to greater fuel inefficiency after long periods of use, so it is wise to replace or upgrade the marine propellers regularly. To achieve greater levels of efficiency and increased production, the YPPI team brought in several new equipment advancements. They include a first-of-its-kind pouring system and higher levels of what the company called “space-efficient automation,” or robotic processing.

YPPI offers great advancement opportunities for it’s employees. I have been here for 37 years and enjoy coming to work every day. If you’re looking for a job you want to be at for the rest of your life, this is the place to be. There are many opportunities for advancement, the sky is the limit.
That performance includes very minimal bow rise during hole shot, and the lower the bow, the greater the forward visibility. (Forward visibility is crucial at blast off in tournament fishing.) At the same time, the FXP provides more overall lift. The result is excellent hole shot, speed and stable handling, even at high engine heights.
As my colleague and Editor-in-Chief Dan Harding dons a silver suit to get a feel for what it’s really like inside that baking-hot room, the whole team cheers and pumps their fists in the air. An inside look at Yamaha Marine’s Precision Propeller Inc. where as many as 60,000 performance outboard propellers are born each year. The color photos shown on this website were prepared with careful attention to accuracy. However, colors shown may vary from actual hues and should only be used as a guide. Because concrete units are manufactured with high quality, naturally-mined aggregates and materials, variations in color or shading should be expected in products that are manufactured at different times and in units having different shapes. The investment casting process YPPI uses, also referred to as lost-wax casting, is an ancient art that has been around for at least 5,000 years. The nuts and bolts of the process are essentially the same, but can be used to manufacture precision parts such as turbocharger impellers, turbine blades and, of course, propellers. Jonathon Burns, YPPI’s general manager, showed us through the factory and explained how Yamaha’s stainless steel props are made, from start to finish. The new Yamaha Marine Precision Propeller facility in Greenfield, Ind. reached full production capacity this July. The advanced casting facility and foundry uses state-of-the-art robotics to significantly reduce lead times and increase production by more than 67 percent, allowing YPPI to deliver more than 100,000 propellers to customers annually. On the other side of the room, I meet Travis Cooper, who is monitoring an injection machine that makes wax “pour cups,” which are attached to the wax hub/blade assemblies and aid in the metal pouring process, acting as a funnel.
“This is where we put a trailing-edge grind on each blade,” he says. “It’s a super important step, because this is what gives the propeller its bite.” He walks us over to his workstation and heavily leans the prop into the belt grinder as sparks fly. It looks easy enough, but this skill apparently takes a long time to learn. The gentleman who shows us his skills has been with the company for 20 years. Each propeller goes through a comprehensive measuring and quality control step—sometimes twice—to ensure it meets Yamaha’s performance specifications.

The sealing surface is created between the flat surfaces of the rotating stainless-steel rotor and the stationary carbon flange. The stationary carbon flange is attached to the front side of the bellow with hose clamps, and the back end of the bellow fits over the Stern tube and is secured with hose clamps. The stainless-steel rotor is fit on the shaft in front of the carbon flange.

The manufacturer said that it offers “world-class benefits and competitive salaries that start well above minimum wage,” and plans to hire more than 30 new employees through the end of 2021. Precision Propellers Industries started as a service shop for propellers in the late 1960’s. Boaters, especially those that liked to go fast, came to the founder Jim Booe to “tweak” their prop to gain more performance in their boat. As business grew, it became apparent that you could build overall performance into the original design so it wouldn’t take customization to a finished product. In the early 1980’s, PPI began manufacturing the TURBO line of propellers. The company grew through both the TURBO line of propellers as well as building propellers for outboard brands as well as private label retailers and distributors.

Cooper came to YPPI through a local high school program that places students with manufacturing skills in factory jobs around the area. The hubs and blades and complete hub/prop units are made the same way by different machines just a few feet away, manned by other factory workers. “Some competitorsÃÂ propellers typically focus on one performance attribute,” said Richie Rodgers, Propeller Business Manager. The robotics created the need for new technical roles to support the equipment and technology. Once the casting has cooled, the long, detailed finishing process begins. These folks, like the foundry workers, seem like unsung heroes of the process—this area is dusty and hot, and the props, still hot to the touch, arrive in a seemingly never-ending stream. “Yamaha built the Greenfield facility with additional capacity in mind – not only to meet today’s demand, but tomorrow’s as well,” said Ak. “As key customers of many vendors that supply U.S.-sourced products, we’ve been at the forefront of receiving the raw materials we needed to keep up the pace.” Yamaha Marine is the only outboard brand to have earned NMMA®’s C.S.I. Customer Satisfaction Index award every year since its inception. Employees of YPPI receive on-the-job foundry training and expert skill development that is said to be directly transferrable to other manufacturing industries.
The molten metal pours so brightly that it’s difficult to look at with the naked eye. Once the mold is filled, the furnace is tipped back, a large, metal can is placed over the prop and the cart is wheeled back toward another part of the room.
The group, which is the sole manufacturer of stainless-steel propellers for Yamaha outboards in the U.S., broke ground on the 55,000 square foot building on five of 28 acres in July of 2019. Yamaha plans to further expand the YPPI campus in the future. Having been here for just over a year, I am still fascinated with our manufacturing process. Being able to work in a hands-on environment for a great company like Yamaha is a truly awesome experience. Being a part of a strong and diverse team from many different backgrounds has been a tremendous asset to my own growth and development as a professional. I can honestly say that I enjoy coming to work here each and every day. A worker on each side pulls out a glowing ceramic mold with a long, metal clamping tool, and then places it on a stand on top of a metal cart that rides on rails set into the floor, much like a miniature railroad.

The manufacturer also offers world-class benefits and competitive salaries that start well above minimum wage, giving employees comfortable lifestyle options within the cost-of-living factor in Greenfield. Precision Propeller Industries, Inc. has launched the new high-performance FXP propeller from Turbo®. Engineered to deliver great overall performance at tournament load, it’s intended specifically for today’s high-performance, high-output four-stroke bass boat outboards. It also works well with these outboards in selected bay and fl ats boats applications. The Greenfield YPPI facility houses the entire propeller casting operation, while the YPPI location in Ritter, Indiana, will serve as the manufacturer’s post casting and finishing facility. The “Competition” section of a business plan or investment memorandum would start by analyzing the information about these companies. Competitive advantage comes from offering better pricing or superior products/service. Precision Propeller started in 1969 in a two-car garage near the current factory site by owner and founder Jim Booe to provide propeller repairs and performance enhancements. By 1980, the outfit was rapidly expanding and producing a line of custom-made TURBO-branded propellers as well as building propellers for outboard manufacturers and private-label retailers and distributors.
Inboard boat propellers are highly operational and have better performance and more fuel efficiency. Yamaha Marine, based in Kennesaw, Ga., markets marine outboard motors ranging in size from 2.5- to 350-hp. The variety of propellers to be supplied by Indianapolis-based PPI will allow Yamaha to better meet the needs of its customers, which include more than 120 independent boatbuilders in the United States. Yamaha plans to retain the company’s workers while making capital investments in the plant and its processes for the production of marine propellers. The new company will now be known as Precision Propeller Industries. Yamaha Marine products are marketed throughout the United States and around the world. YPPI employees have the advantage of on-the-job foundry training and expert skill development that is directly transferrable to other manufacturing industries.
